At Kili Altitude Adventures, we believe every step on Mount Kilimanjaro is a journey through both nature and time. One of the most fascinating yet often overlooked spots on the mountain is the Shira Cave, nestled high on the Shira Plateau. This cave isn’t just a resting point on some of the most scenic routes—it’s a geological wonder that tells the story of how Kilimanjaro was formed.
What Is Shira Cave?
Shira Cave is located at about 3,840 meters (12,600 feet) above sea level on the western slopes of Kilimanjaro. It’s a small, shallow lava cave along the Shira Route, also accessible from the Lemosho Route, two of the most beautiful and less crowded paths to the summit.
Today, Shira Cave is used as a day rest stop rather than an overnight camp to help preserve its condition. However, it remains a favorite among climbers for its stunning views and unique volcanic rock formations.
The Geological Formation of Shira Cave
To understand Shira Cave’s origin, we go back more than 500,000 years—to the birth of Mount Kilimanjaro.
Kilimanjaro is made up of three volcanic cones:
-
Shira – the oldest and now extinct,
-
Mawenzi – jagged and dramatic,
-
Kibo – the youngest and tallest, home to the Uhuru Peak summit.
The Shira cone was the first to erupt, forming a towering volcano. But over time, it collapsed inward, creating what’s now known as the Shira Plateau. Lava from later eruptions of Kibo flowed over this plateau, reshaping the terrain and hardening into thick rock layers.
Shira Cave was formed when lava tubes—underground rivers of molten rock—cooled and drained, leaving behind hollow spaces. Weather, erosion, and freezing temperatures over the centuries expanded the cave, giving it its current shape.
